Independence Monument - Phnom Penh

Built in Angkorian style in 1958, this tower is located in the center of Phnom Pehn to symbolize Cambodia's independence from French protectorate on November 9, 1953. It is considered popular with locals and at night is lit up with the colours of the national flag; blue, red and white.
During Independence Day there are many events outside the monument including ceremonial services. Visitors are not allowed inside the monument.

Considered a port city in the 1950's, this beach town has increased in popularity due to its white sand beaches and a laid back atmosphere perfect for relaxation. Popular activities are snorkeling, scuba diving or fishing, and for the wide arrangement of accommodations in the downtown area and along the beaches such as 5-star resorts. In Southeast Asia, this area has some of the most unspoiled beaches around and international aid was provided to upgrade the infrastructure in the province. 

The Great Lake Tonle Sap - Siem Reap

Tonle Sap Lake is so large that it stretches the northwest of the country and 5 separate provinces circle around it. Nearly 3 million people earning their living working on the lake, primarily in the fishing industry and is considered an important resource for commercial growth in the country. The Chong Khneas is the famous floating village on the lake and it is advised to visit during monsoon season, as the dry season is very muddy.

Civil War Museum - Siem Reap

This is the only war museum in Cambodia and was built with the purpose of educating visitors about the Civil War with raged through the country. Prices for Cambodian nationals and visitors differ with locals paying $1/per visit and foreigners paying $5/per visit. Only cash payments are accepted. A time line of the war is provided and photos of the war, victims and prisoners are shown. The museum used to see over 200 visitors per day and is considered important landmark to that country because the tanks could have been sold for scrap metal at the profit but it is recognized as an important peace of history for the education. 

Royal Palace - Phnom Penh

A must see for visitors to Phnom Pehn, the royal palace is glittering in gold adornments and is the current residence of the royal family. It is home to the royal treasury and a 17th century emerald Buddha statue which is heavy with precious gems. It is unlikely visitors will see the royal family members as they have private quarters away from the public but the buildings are used during celebrations, government visitors, coronations and welcoming foreign dignitaries. There are magnificent fresco paintings which are hundreds of meters long visitors may view.

Adorned in magnificent stone carvings this temple transports visitors back to the time of its use. It was said to be built on the place King Jayavarman VII hid before he was able to take the throne as king in 1181 AD, because it sits within the jungle which is hard to search and rather inaccessible. Locals still visit the site but it is not as popular with tourists as other temples throughout the country. 

Koh Ker Temple - Preah Vihear

This temple sits on the original capital of Cambodia. It is 35 meters tall and resembles a pyramid with it's 7-layered steps. It faces Angkor city and was built to the god of happiness. The temple is made of sandstone and parts of the temple have become overgrown with grass and vegetation but the views are considered excellent for visitors. A well nearby is connected to a pond near the Neang Khmao Temple.

Bayon Temple - Siem Reap

The temple is located in the center of Angkor Thom this temple provides excellent photo opportunities of its stone carved faces. It was built in the early 13th century to show devotion to Buddha, which was about 100 years after the temple in Angkor Wat but the exact dates are still not known by modern historians. Famously, there are over 200 stone carved faces which visitors may see, and the temples are a complex mix of passages and galleries which are connected by narrow walkways. The art styles are uncommon for Khmer art and is circular in shape. 

Banteay Srei Temple - Siem Reap

This temple is sometimes referred to as a fairy palace, and built entirely out of pink sandstone which gives it a beautiful colour in the sun. Sitting in a the middle of the jungle this temple miraculously remains in excellent condition. The temple's original name was called "Isvarapura" and is considered to be styled with more native Indian architecture and sculptures than other temples in the area in Angkor. It is sometimes called the 'jewel of Khmer art'.  The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

Ankor Wat - Siem Reap

Considered a 7th wonder of the world, Ankor Wat and located 6km north of Siem Reap. Built in the 12th century, it took 30 years to complete as a dedication to the Hindu god Vishnu. It became a Buddhist temple in the 16th century and is cared for by monks.
The temples are considered romantic and grand as every spot you look shows a different image or carving.
